Question:
Wow alot of athiests complain that we try and help them?

If a little bit of compassion and selflessness is such a bad thing then this world is truly twisted
If we try to help you its bad, If we didnt try to help youd attack us saying we are supposed to be compassionate/selfess help others etc etc etc.

Help me what? Avoid Hell?

Because most of the time the "help" isn't compassionate or selfless. I'm not saying that this is all the time, some genuinely do think that they're helping. But many Christians just tell us we're all sinners and going to hell if we don't repent or believe in their God. It's one thing to say "my life really improved after I started turning to religion, it could do the same for you", but when people say "join our religion and believe in our God or else you'll burn in hell for eternity" it's quite another. The former is stated in a way that respects the beliefs, or lack thereof, of atheists. The latter belittles atheists and therefore we find it offensive and not really helping at all so much as them trying to feel like they're better than us. Most of the time we experience the more disrespectful tactic, so atheists are disrespectful back. But for the times when Christians treat us like equals rather than sinners, those of us who actually practice what we preach about tolerance do appreciate the fact that you care enough to tell us about religion in order to improve our lives. You seem to be that type of person, and I thank you for that. Please don't think that all of us believe you to be "forcing it down our throats" as it's so often considered, there are still those of us that know the difference between self-righteous fundamentalists and compassionate Christians.

I wasn't aware I was in need of any help, yet I still have "help" forced on me constantly by good-meaning christians who apparently feel I do. The only thing I want from anyone, christian or otherwise, is respect and acceptance for who I am, beliefs and all, or lack thereof. I don't appreciate being made to feel as if I am in need of "help" and need to be "saved." Sorry, but for some reason, a lot of christians do feel this is their duty. I do not need to be saved as I am happy with who I am. I am a good person because I am just that-a good person. not because I am fearful of going to hell. I would appreciate a openminded conversation with anyone on religion if I wasn't quoted bible scriptures constantly, which, in my opinion, make absolutely no sense at all. Half the time, I don't think christians understand them either.

Everything earns a brand/logo/trademark even if it's not desired. I believe many Christians use words more than actions. Anyone can say anything.....but, it's your actions that give you your mark.

The only trademark people see of Christians is generally a hypocrite.

My advice....help who will take it. Is telling someone to believe in God the answer? Work toward helping people (not just with words..but actions), worry less about someone believing. No matter what you say people have their own choice. By your question I believe your heart is in the right place....but, remember....we have a trademark regardless. - Succor -

You are trying to help me? Did I say I needed help?

"You call me a hipocrit but these comments that some athiests make in regards to Christians come from the exact same people that try to convert Christians to Athiesm- This is hipocricy"

-Most atheists are not trying to convert you, but if you are going to "help" people than you should be ready to have a debate about it. I could care less what anyone believes as long as they don't try to run my life.

"God has the potential for a more fulfilled and meaningful life"

-Sounds to me like you think you're better than us whether you admit it or not. Our lives are just as meaningful and fulfilled as yours is.

And you need to do more research about who commits unlawful deeds more yourself... google the statistics.

Stuff your self rightiousness. What makes you think you are qualified to "help" or even should be "helping" others? Go get your fave book of rules (bible) and re-read Matthew 7 verses 1-5.

many christians here seem to forget Jesus's words Matthew 7:1-5

"Don't criticize, and then you won't be criticized. For others will treat you as you treat them. And why worry about a speck in the eye of a brother when you have a board in your own? Should you say 'Friend, let me help you get that speck out of your eye,' when you can't even see because of the board in your own? Hypocrite! First get rid of the board. Then you can see to help your brother."

Wanting to help people is fine, I want to help people, and do frequently. But that doesn't involve trying to force my religion on them, or involve me sounding like I think I'm better than anyone else just because I have faith in something.

"I wish I could make a cake and decorate it with rainbows and smiles. everyone could eat it and be happy."

seriously we need to not worry SO MUCH about what an Atheist chooses to do with their life. they dont want help so lets not try and help them. just because they ask a question doesnt mean they want help. some people just like to be ignorant and talk about how Christians believe in an imaginary being.

Aheists shouldnt worry about Christians and Christians shouldnt worry about Atheists.

the only problem I see with an Atheist is how can they believe your soul doesnt go anywhere and you just rot in the ground? *is confused* WHAT THE CHEESE AND CRACKERS are we living our lives for then? with that belief youre basically saying we just live our lives to rot in the ground. theres nothing to show for it in the end. how anticlimactic is that? no celebration for living a good life. its like lives have no meaning.

That's the point, we don't want your, 'help'. We have no need of your services and you don't seem to get it. We can stand alone and have no need of your God. Our God is evidential proof, science and an understanding of the natural World; not blind faith in something as ethereal as a deity that has no proof or demonstrable material existence and is born out of ignorance and the need to explain the inexplicable.

It is very patronising and condescending to help us and deliver us from eternal damnation when we think your beliefs are predicated on the biggest lie and fairy tale in all of human history.

I'm sure that your actions are genuine and based on the best of motives but it is irritating beyond belief to a non believer. I for one, enjoy the banter and cut and thrust of this forum but don't take it too seriously.

Attempting to force your religion on us is not helping us, it's just pissing us off. If you want to help someone, go feed some starving people. When someone tells you to help others they don't mean try to force your spiritual beliefs down other people's throats, they mean go volunteer at a soup kitchen or something. I guess people like you can't tell the difference between what actually helps people and what's just being a pain in the ***, that is the problem I have with religion.

David, you've asked a very good question and from some of the responses, you seem to have touched a nerve with some of the folks. I for one applaud you for trying to set the record straight.

Just the other day, someone had posted a question with the tag-line, "Why don't Christians respond to my question" or something like that. The link provided was to a question like "An atheist smells like ______________ " or something along those lines. You're right, when we as Christians try to answer a question, we're condemned for being hateful, bigoted, narrow-minded, and a host of other slurs--all because we're responding with the truth of God's Word! And if we don't try to answer, we get epithets such as being cold, uncaring, unresponsive, and the beat goes on.

What do 'I' really want from Christians?

More than anything else, I want Christians to stop using their ignorant superstitions to stifle the advance of human civilization. Humanity would be much further developed if it weren't for superstitious religion relentlessly working to impede social and intellectual progress.

That is what we have ears for, if one does not like what the other is saying, then let it go in one ear and out the other.

That goes for us christians the same as the atheists.

If someone ask for my help, I am always at hand to do my best for

what I can do,but I have learned that you can only help those who are willing to help themselves.

David there's help, and then there's pointless quotation of scripture, urgings to convert and pray, none of which prevent Chrstians suffering, so where's the intelligence of trying to convince us that's going to solve our issues when it doesn't really solve yours? You still make mistakes, you still do wicked things, you still suffer and you still die, so why peddle your non-working solutions to us other than you want company in your delusion? Too many of you say "Go and be warm and filled" without feeding anyone.

You aren't trying to help, you're trying to push your ideology on us. Big difference.

What we want from you is for you to stop thinking that your way is the only way. Try some critical thinking as to why you actually believe what you do. How is your religion any more credible than any other? Once you realize it's NOT, then you will realize why your proselytizing is so annoying.

It's because we aren't asking for any help from you. A TRUE Christian would simply offer their ideas of what faith means to them, and allow us to do with it what we choose.
2009-06-19 20:47:17 UTC
Help no I don't think so. Nothing but respect is wanted from you . Don't try to change just respect others beliefs. Nobody wants to have strangers telling them how to live their life.

well well

christians sin more than atheists

look at the catholic church molesting thousands of little innocent boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how disgraceful !! and catholic preists!

look at the PTL club, JIM bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, and the other ones being caught with prostitutes, gay ones, too

christians dont believe in gayness, yet a christian preacher has been having gay sex for a long time as well as being married, how sick!!!

.

.

.

since you want to help people..........send half of your paycheck each week to feed the starving people in africa

even better, go help the homeless here in our own country

they will be very grateful to you and you will get 100 bonus points for each person you help.......you need 500,000 points to get to heaven, each sin takes away 1,000 points

if you even think about sex or other sins, its still 1000 points taken away

It's actually the way you go about your 'helping' us that makes us question your compassion and selflessness.

You guys can be SO holier than thou and unforgiving. Having someone look down their nose at me doesn't help me, it just pisses me off.

Besides, it's like what everyone else said, we never asked for your so-called 'help'.
2009-06-19 20:46:30 UTC
I'm equally as human as you are and capable of living my life myself. Go help someone who is actually really in need. Not just, by your view, in need of your god.

Why is acceptance of your or someone else's god more important than ending hunger.
