Those that take the red pill, those that are unplugged are atheists. Those that take the blue pill, those that are still hardwired into the system/Matrix are theists. Morpheus once said that the Matrix is "a prison for your mind." Sounds a lot like religion.

Yes, being plugged into the matrix is being blind to the real world aka secularism/atheism. They are in denial of a higher reality because they can't see or understand it. Psion, is heaven. Neo is Jesus. Being unplugged from the matrix is being born again. The entire series is based on biblical themes. The Nebachenezar is the ship they are on, also a biblical King whom gets dreams interpreted be Daniel in the Bible.

But this is only one layer of this awesome movie. We can also look at the dream references. Alice in wonderland, Nebachenezar, and several more characters who are famous as dreamers are referenced over and over.

There are Buddhist, Taoist, Hindu, and Shinto references.

In college I had a vhs player with 4 movies. I watched the matrix at least 30 times from 2000 to 2002.

Religion is just one of the many dreams the blue pill leads back to.

If after taking the red pill atheism is all that results, that can lead to nihilism and going back into the Matrix, or an attempt to, like in the case of Cypher.

Atheism isn't meant to be a destination. Ideally, it can be a step on a path that leads further.

Congratulations.

You have cracked the code

of The Matrix,

except that the Matrix

represents blind belief,

not atheism.

It's a metaphor for many things. Many ideologies enslave us and control us whether they be religion, money, power, politics, etc.

However, often breaking free from these has its own problems. Can't really live without money, without government society woukd go into violent anarchy, etc.

Also, a lot of the people crying 'wake up sheeple' are actually sheeple themselves... pledging themselves to scam artists or enlightening themselves with information on the internet that is completly wrong since websites are rated on traffic, not truthfulness.

Archer nailed it,its a social commentary of the reality we live in and whats hidden pulling the strings behind the curtain

you can awaken to it or stay asleep.

I think the film is a depiction of our reality. It is possible that it is all an illusion, regardless it is the matrix or framework we live in. We know the particles that we are made of are, in essence, just energy but it is what we consider "real", whatever that means. Those that take the red pills of drugs, alcohol and delusion could be considered to have stepped outside of "reality", but are no more free than the rest of us, their reality is defined by their "pills", it does not make their reality any more real than ours. Great film though.

I thought the red pill was a metaphor for atheism and nonconformity in general

No, it's a metaphor for politics. The red pill makes you a rightwing or a rightwing libertarian, opens you're eyes up to the dangers of liberalism/socialism/globalism, and Nazi style healthcare systems. The blue pill keeps you ignorant, makes you think that having borders and not wanting to pay for everyone else's welfare makes you racist. Putting your own people first makes you a Nazi. The blue pill makes you listen and obey to every single command your liberal overlords, Hollywood actors, and politicians, want you to believe or do.

No. Not in particular. The Matrix trilogy is like philosphy 101 made into movies. Solipsism is what's being explored there.

There's a reason that pretty much every major supporting character engages in soliloquy to Neo. They're all explaining a different philosophical idea to him/us.

Actually the matrix is a perfect metaphor for spirituality....with another , more real existence waiting for us, when we unplug here....and the Atheists are the coppertops who reject that other reality
