Cereberal:

For the history of magic, superstition, and religion read Frazer's Golden Bough. For the psychology of religion read William James, "The varieties of religious experience" For an overview of world religions get the Oxford Guide to World Religions form the library. Oh yeah, Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces.

For my religion, Roman Catholicism, read CS Lewis, Mere Christianity and read GK Chesterton's orthodoxy. If that's not enough read the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The final reference is a site with the sacred writings of many traditions

Enjoy.

4. "Pilgrim's Progress," by John Bunyan

5. "the Everlasting Man," by G.K. Chesterton

This book is great for understanding Christian beliefs and doctrines. It discusses not only what the beliefs are but how they compare with other Christian denominations and cults. It is very well written, understandable, and isn't preachy at all.

"Conviction Without Compromise: Standing Strong in the Core Beliefs of the Christian Faith," by Norman Geisler and Ron Rhodes.

I have quoted from it often answering questions people have on R&S.

Hi,

I think that the book "Mankind's Search for God" is an excellent source for an in-depth look at the world's religions. You may obtain a copy of this publication free of charge at the Kingdom Hall in your area.
2010-03-31 16:10:31 UTC
Are you looking for a general "World Religions" book, which covers descriptions of various different religions? Or religion from a psychological point of view? If it's the latter, I recommend the following:

- Boyer, Pascal. "Religion Explained". Basic Books, 2002

- Shermer, Michael. "How We Believe". Holt Paperbacks, 2003

- Tremlin, Todd. "Minds and Gods: The Cognitive Foundations of Religion". Oxford University Press, 2006

I would try reading the holy books of many different realigions(((The bible(christianity)The Torah(judaism) or even the koran**also called the qur`an**the holy book of the muslims))) You learn a lot just by reading what they believe. Also try your local library there are many books about various religions. Wikipedia is also another great place to look i have found that everything on there i have read is all true facts so dont be scared away by rumors.

Hope I helped!!

Karen Armstrong has written many books on the world's greatest religions. THE GOLDEN BOUGH talks about native beliefs throughout the world. WHO WROTE THE BIBLE? by Thomas Freidman is fascinating. WHO WROTE THE GOSPELS? taught me much about early Christianity. Some other books that explain Christianity and the Bible are CONSTANTINE'S SWORD, GOD'S SECRETARIES, WIDE AS THE WATERS BE, JESUS MISQUOTED, UNEARTHING JESUS, and THE EVOLUTION OF GOD. For information on a variety of religions go to the 200 section in your local library. The Jesus seminar website www.faithmeetsreason.com has an extensive bibliography of books about Christianity and spirituality that you may enjoy. And Amazon.com has a whole section on RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY. Happy reading!

I paid a $1 for Hitchen's book at a used book store and it was pathetic, I wish I had bought a coffee as for Dawkins and Harris.... I would be embarrassed to be an atheist if these men are supposed to be speaking for me.

They all are like reading a rant by an angry teen that doesn't care about historicity, accuracy, integrity only ranting.

http://www.amazon.com/Dawkins-GOD-Genes-Memes-Meaning/dp/1405125381

In "Dawkins' GOD: Genes, Memes, and the Meaning of Life" Francis Collins, Director of the Human Genome Project say that Alister McGrath

"Wielding evolutionary arguments and carefully chosen metaphors like sharp swords, Richard Dawkins has emerged over three decades as this generation's most aggressive promoter of atheism. In his view, science, and science alone, provides the only rock worth standing on. In this remarkable book, Alister McGrath challenges Dawkins on the very ground he holds most sacred - rational argument - and McGrath disarms the master. It becomes readily apparent that Dawkins has aimed his attack at a naive version of faith that most serious believers would not recognize. After reading this carefully constructed and eloquently written book, Dawkins' choice of atheism emerges as the most irrational of the available choices about God's existence."

The Dawkins Delusion by Alister McGrath with Joanna Collicutt McGrath

" The God Delusion makes me embarrassed to be an atheist, and the McGraths show why."

The Vedas, It is the most ancient and perfect. All that you want to know about the Creation, about God, about the soul, etc, is there in a straightforward way, with no place for misinterpretations.

It is better to start with the Srimad Bhagavad Gita As It Is Bhagavat means God and Gita means song, the Lord Himself giving us instructions of different Yoga in how to achieve Him. One example of this wonderful book:

BG 2.23: The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.

BG 2.24: This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.

I am a Muslim, but I recommend you read Torah, BibleS and The Holy Quran and compare and see which one is more logical and real and true. Nothing is better than to start from the sources to learn. It's normal that anyone would like you to read what they believe in, but if u r a seeker of truth, it would be more profitable and reasonable to read all holy books and compare.

May God lead us to the Right Path, Amen
