There is absolutely nothing in the Bible that supports the idea that the Apostle Peter was a pope.

The Bible doesn't even indicate he was ever in Rome.

The best Peter-Pope-als can do is quote Matthew 16:18, "I say to you, you are Peter, and on this rock-mass I will build my congregation. . .".

However, the term for Peter and the term for rock-mass are different.

It is especially strange when you consider that Jesus spent 3 years telling the 12 they are all equal, none of them were more important.

Peter was never made pope. He was an apostle and had certain leadership as a result of that. Peter never exercised power over the church. In fact in Acts there was a certain issue that arose with Gentiles becoming Christians and whether they needed to first be a jew. Peter spoke his peace but the decision was made by a council in the Jerusalem and an Elder by the name of James seem to have more leadership than even Peter at that time.

And that verse that says and on this rock I will build my church. Christ was not referring to Peter himself but what Peter said. That "Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God."

No Dear...Yet Jesus pressed His disciples: “But whom say ye that I am?” Finally, Peter proclaimed, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

To this startling confession, Jesus responded, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” To come to a correct understanding of Jesus requires more than an understanding of history, it requires a revelation from the Holy Spirit.

Jesus then added, “Thou are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Of course, the rock upon which the church is built is not the fickle apostle, but rather Jesus Christ. Peter didn’t see himself as the foundation of the church; rather, he says in Acts 4:11 that Jesus Himself is the chief cornerstone.

In Matthew 28:18 it says:

"Then Jesus came to them (the disciples) and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

I agree. That is not saying that Jesus is making Peter a pope. That scripture is talking about the "revelation" that Peter received about who Jesus is...the "Son of God". That revelation is what the church would be built on.

I am not aware of any scripture saying that Jesus or anyone else made Peter pope. There is none.

God bless you!

It isn't about who the 'rock' is. That isn't the key point in understanding that Peter was the leader of the Church. The key point is that Peter was given the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Keys symbolize authority. Compare the two passages below and you will see that this authority can be passed down in the form of an office:

Isaiah 22: 15-22 “This is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: “Go, say to this steward, to Shebna the palace administrator: What are you doing here and who gave you permission to cut out a grave for yourself here, hewing your grave on the height and chiseling your resting place in the rock? “Beware, the LORD is about to take firm hold of you and hurl you away, you mighty man. He will roll you up tightly like a ball and throw you into a large country. There you will die and there the chariots you were so proud of will become a disgrace to your master’s house. I will depose you from your office, and you will be ousted from your position. “In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”

Matthew 16: 16-20 “Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Jesus told Peter that he would be the chief shepherd of the Church (this is the pope's role).

John 21:15-19 “ When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!””

You need to understand what Pope means. It simply mean father and was used for pretty much all of the Bishops back in the day until about the Middle Ages. The Pope is the Bishop of Bishops, the head of the Church.

It is like the ARMY, you have a ranking system, the President is the Top, then Vice President, Sec. of Defense, &c., then the General, Lt. Gen. Major Gen. Brig. Gen, Colonel, &c., which it breaks further down as you get into the different bases, Brigades, Battalions, &c. Though there is one General and Sergeant Major (Sergeant Major of the ARMY) who is at the top of this ranking system (The President is obviously above them). So is the same with the Cardinals, Archbishops, &c., and their Dioceses. They all still fall under the Pope.

In the Bible, you need to understand that St. Peter's (our first Pope) name was changed to Peter. To be more exact we read in the Gospel of John Chapter 1 verse 42:

"And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called ᴬCephas, which is interpreted Peter."

ᴬCephah is a Syriac word ܟ݁ܺܐܦ݂ܳܐ. which means Rock. Here it was transliterated into Greek as Κηφᾶς.

So now we can determine that Christ Change Simon's name to Cephah by saying "thou shalt be called Cephas."

Now when we look at The Gospel of Matthew, Christ makes Peter into the Foundation for His Church. As Christ is the Architect, He is able to choose whosoever He wants for the foundation. Within Eph. ii. 20 Paul states "Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone:"

The above says that the Apostles and the Prophets were made foundations, though Christ is the main Cornerstone.

In Matthew xvi. 18:

"And I say to thee: That thou art ᴮPeter; and upon this ᴰrock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

ᴮPeter is the English Transliteration of the Greek Πέτρος (Petros) the masculine form of πέτρᾳ (petra), which Πέτρος is the Translation of ܟ݁ܺܐܦ݂ܳܐ (Cephah).

ᴰRock is the translation of πέτρᾳ (Petra) which in turn is a translation of ܟ݁ܺܐܦ݂ܳܐ (Cephah).

So the most proper translation would be:

"And I say to thee: That thou art a Rock; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

And [Christ] Continues on to say:

"And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven."

That is a very high position, to be given to Keys.

You must also understand that Christ also said to Peter and Peter alone:

"Feed my lambs, feed my lambs, feed my sheep" (within the Greek it is Ποίμαινε i.e., to feed and rule [as a Shepherd]., v. 16 while Βόσκε i.e., to feed., for v.15 & v. 17) --This is from John xxi. 15-17

Christ also said : "And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd." [John x. 16]

In the O.T. God stated : "AND I WILL SET UP ONE SHEPHERD OVER THEM, and he shall feed them, even my servant David: he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd." [Ezechiel xxiv. 23]

So that is the position of the Pope.
Respectfully Yours

Church teaching but not a Biblical one, here's what I've learned ...

As to the claim that Peter was the first bishop of Rome, there is no proof that he even visited that city. In fact, Peter himself states that he wrote his first letter from Babylon. (1 Peter 5:13)

Peter NEVER referred to himself as anything more than one of Christ’s apostles. (2 Peter 1:1) Nowhere in the Bible is he addressed as “Holy Father,” “Supreme Pontiff,” or “Pope” (Latin, papa, an affectionate term for “Father”).

Instead, he humbly adhered to Jesus’ words at Matthew 23:9, 10: “Moreover, do not call anyone your father on earth, for one is your Father, the heavenly One. Neither be called ‘leaders,’ for your Leader is one, the Christ.” Peter did not accept veneration.

When Roman centurion Cornelius “fell down at his feet and did obeisance to him . . . , Peter lifted him up, saying: ‘Rise; I myself am ALSO A MAN ’”—Acts 10:25, 26.

The Rock was The Word(the teaching of Christ)..... not Peter..... though Peter was appointed to the leadership of the Apostles and early Church... by God... after christs Ascension to heaven........ The papist dogma and "tradition" is not from God.... there is no Apostolic secession... and there are no popes or priests in The True Church commissioned by God

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholic Christians, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

Pope means Bishop. Jesus appointed him personally.

We, as Catholics, are taught that St. Peter was the leader of the Christian Church, The Vicar of Christ (Christ's representative on earth). However some Non-Catholics says that St. Peter was just one of the Apostles and never the leader of the Church.

Well, let's check scripture and see:

Matthew 16:18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

We see here that Jesus chose St. Peter as his Rock to build his Church on and he gave him he "Keys to the Kingdom".

Some will say that Peter (Petros) in Greek means small pebble not "Rock" which is true, but Jesus didnt speak Greek, he spoke Aramaic and he called St. Peter "Cephas" which means "Rock". In Greek Petros (Pebble) is masculine and Petra (Rock) is Feminie, the translators couldnt use the Feminine to describe a Male so they went with the masculine Petros. When confronted by someone who says the "Greek" translation of "Petros" is Pebble be sure to remind them that Jesus didnt speak Greek.

But is this all we've got to prove St. Peter is the leader? No, there is much more.

We see here that at Pentecost, it is Peter among the 11 that is the voice to the Jews.

Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

Here after ending a debate about the Gentiles, as the leader of the Church he reminds the Apostles that God chose him to be the voice of the Gentiles as well:

Act 15:7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

After Jesus' resurrection, Jesus again officially hands all authority of his flock to St. Peter:

John 21:15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

16 He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep."

Is this all? Nope, there is more.

Who was the first person Mary Magdalene told of Jesus rising from the dead? St. Peter!

John 20:2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."

Peter addresses the crowds:

Acts 1:15 During those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (there was a group of about one hundred and twenty persons in the one place). He said,

Who did Ananias and his wife Sapphira answer to? St. Peter of course.

Acts 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?

Peace be with you

It is an earned position in the Church...

God is very touchy and UNFORGIVING about money issues. The Bible writers spelled out the “UNPARDONABLE SIN” against “God the Holy Ghost.” They gave Christians an example so they won’t be confused about ANY OTHER MEANING! It is failure to pay at least the 10% of their gross income, or any other amount above it promptly to the CHURCH TREASURY! If a Christian promise, they must pay! This issue is so serious that God would KILL IN FULL COLD BLOOD and on the spot anybody failing to comply! The Mafia is known to give a few slow bleeding warnings before cutting anybody down, not so God the Holy Ghost!

Act 5:1-11 (NIV) Peter* (*an illiterate Jewish fisherman. 2000 Years ago he became the First Pope EXTORTING MONEY from his parishioners… Christianity comes a long way, baby!) said to her* (*a Church lady), “How could you agree to test the SPIRIT OF THE LORD?* (*aka “Holy Ghost,” aka “The Comforter,” aka “The Helper,”) Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door* (*in the Bible stories, non tithing Christians are buried in the Church graveyard as soon as they drop dead. Nobody at their home is notified. Secular morality is forcing Christianity to act a bit more civilized today) and they will carry you out also.” At that moment she fell down at his feet and died* (*Saint Peter did no professional “spiritual counseling” to prevent her death! In this story the lady died without knowing that a few moments earlier her husband was cut down and buried right then and there for the same reason! Nobody told their kids at home that God killed their parents! ALL CHRISTIANS ARE WARNED on getting serious about giving MONEY to the Church, for Christ’s sake!) Then the young men* (*members of “YOUTH FOR CHRIST”) came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband! GREAT FEAR SEIZED THE WHOLE CHURCH AND ALL WHO HEARD ABOUT THESE EVENTS* (*all Christians today know by heart their sacred duty to tithe 10% of their gross income to the Church, Temple, or Kingdom Hall).

Mark 14:7 (KJV) (JESUS SAID) For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good* (*Regardless of any other story in the Bible JESUS IS REALLY SAYING THAT HELPING THE POOR IS OPTIONAL, never a priority!): BUT ME YE HAVE NOT ALWAYS* (*Jesus is an extremely narcissist person! He loves to have his @ss kissed all the time! Luke 7:45).

When Jesus Christ said in Mat 28:20, “Lo, I am with you always, EVEN UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD. Amen.” HE WAS BULL CRAPPING! Spiritually speaking, of course!

The Bible writers are REMINDING Christians that God the Son Jesus Christ is WATCHING how much money and in what PROPORTION people give to GOD! Christians can’t escape Jesus’ watchful eye on how much money they drop in the offering plate, box, bag, or what have you! The story of not letting your left hand know what your w@nking right hand is doing is a “spiritually speaking” teaser of a different sort! JESUS also said, “NOT TO BLOW THE HORN EVERYTIME YOU GIVE ANY MONEY…” If it is an impressive amount, let Jesus and the Clergy do it for you AS YOU KEEP ON GIVING!!!

Mark 12:42-43 (KJV) And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites* (*bits of money), which make a farting. And he* (*Jesus) CALLED UNTO HIM HIS DISCIPLES* (*Jesus is using this event to tell his 12 Holy Apostles that he knows how much money people drop in the offering plate!), and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you* (*REALLY THIS IS NO BULL CRAP!!!), That this poor widow hath cast more in, than ALL* (*Jesus doesn’t miss ANYBODY ELSE’S INCOME VS CHURCH GIVING) they which have cast into the TREASURY* (*Jesus recognizes the CLERGY’S WORKPLACE and that “THEY HAVE THEIR REWARD!” Mat 6:2):

Tithing is one of the first lessons that any new Christian, Mormon, JW, or what have you learns as soon as they are converted! One of GOD’S ETERNAL ATTRIBUTES IS HIS IMPOTENCE TO ACT IF THE “TREASURY” goes broke!

Malachi 3:9-10 YOU ARE UNDER A CURSE—THE WHOLE NATION OF YOU* (*ISRAEL, ALL JEWS) —because YOU ARE ROBBING ME* (*$$$). BRING THE WHOLE TITHE* (*10% of any income) into the STOREHOUSE* (*TREASURY! Clergy place of business), that there may be FOOD* (*REAL MONEY!) in my house* (*or God will starve to death and Christianity will die!).

Matthew 25:41 (Jesus yells at the JEWS) Depart from me, YE CURSED* (*for robbing GOD!!!), into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

So Good Luck all ye sucker LOW IQ Christians… KEEP ON GIVING OR YOU GO TO HELL!!!

IF Jesus ever existed… he was quite a character!
