“An Editing Error”

? According to a prophecy in the Book of Mormon, American Indians would become “white and delightsome” if they join the Mormon Church. The Mormons believe that the dark skin of the Indians was a curse God put on their ancestors, which would be lifted if they became Mormons. But in 1978, Spencer Kimball, the church president, “announced a revelation from God,” and the church “scrapped a racial doctrine that prevented blacks from holding the priesthood,” says a recent New York Times report. So now, in a new edition of the Book of Mormon, the passage in question reads “pure and delightsome” instead. A church official said that “the word ‘white’ was an editing error and that Mr. [Joseph] Smith intended to have the prophecy use the word ‘pure.”’

That is incorrect. To claim that a person with a non-white skin would become white upon conversion is nonsense. It would also imply that we believe those of non-white racial origin are somehow lesser or even cursed. That is not what we believe at all.

Joseph Smith said on many occasions that those who enter the waters of baptism and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ would be cleansed of their sins and become pure. This does not only apply to Native Americans.

Nope. But you are trying to make it say things that it doesn't say.

There was AN instance where a group of people became righteous and also became lighter. It's not a promise. It's not a cause and effect. Jesus walked on water. So does this mean that all Christians everywhere can always walk on water??? That's basically the logic you're using here.

That passage indicates that they were white/pure AND delightsome. Not delightsome BECAUSE they were white/pure. It's not saying that White people are delightsome and dark people are not.

Did you bother reading the verse in 2nd Nephi where it says:

"...he inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, BLACK and white, bond and free, male and female..."

That doesn't really sound like a book that is promoting racism to me. Does it to you???

As for the change that you're referring to, it occurred in 1840.....not 1978 and was changed to reflect the text on the original manuscript as the editor had mistakenly typeset "white" instead of "pure". It was in 1981 that it was realized that this mistake had been carried forward inadvertently and it was once again changed back to reflect the correction that had originally occurred in 1840.

There have been a number of errors that were made in the transition from manuscript to printed text and nearly every one (I know of only one exception) has been corrected to match the original manuscript.

Nice try though.

You have obviously been reading some anti-Mormon propaganda. Sadly, there is very little truth in what you have quoted. When you repeat such demonstrably false data, it makes you look like a troll.

Joseph Smith himself changed the translation of the word "white" to the word "pure" so people wouldn't jump to the wrong conclusion, as your sources apparently insist on doing. Blacks have enjoyed membership in the LDS church from its earliest days. The LDS church was one of the few churches that were abolutionists. The Mormons were driven out of Missouri, in part because they spoke up for the rights of blacks. The LDS church never embraced segregation like the other churches of the day, but invited all races to come and worship God together.

1. There was no "Mormon Church" when the BoM was written.

2. That refers to spirituality because they (the lamanites, not Native Americans) belonged to the....I forget the term but an evil religion...

3. No they don't believe you can physically turn white....

4. It wasn't a revelation and he didn't say blacks could then get the priesthood. If you read the declaration he said that skin color is not a deciding factorr for who gets the priesthood and who doesn't.

Joseph Smith let blacks have the priesthood, but Brigham Young was a racist asshole who took it away from them...and no one changed it back until Kimble.

I don't know any thing about editing errors.

This is the way it reads on a copy of a BOM that I have.I have Cap some words to draw emphasis.

And he had caused the CURSING to come upon them yea, even a sore CURSING because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts agaist him, that they had become like unto a flint: wherefore, as they were WHITE, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of BLACKNESS to come upon them. (2 Nephi 5:21 from the Book of Mormon)

As my testimony, I will tell you that the book of Mormon is false and the Mormon Church is false. As you can see, that is not the church of Jesus Christ. I hope all Mormons can read this and pray and see if you think the Mormon church really is the true church.

May God Bless you all

Says a lot doesn't it. Didn't god already say something about not judging - guess it just goes to show how busy god is if it took til 1978 before it was revealed to the mormons that racial prejudice is a no no actually I think any atheist could have told them.

Here's an article from the LDS.org website that goes into detail on textual changes in the Book of Mormon. http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?hideNav=1&locale=0&sourceId=761805481ae6b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD

Why waste my time? i do no longer talk with perfect grammar, so why would desire to I care approximately how others write solutions on right here (till of direction, it quite is thoroughly illegible). Y/A isn't a writing opposition. it is not artwork. it is not college. it quite is for sport and documents (hardly awareness approximately spelling and punctuation). human beings would desire to handle IT.
