First of all every human on this planet is a child of God, therefore, He loves each and every one of us no matter our behavior.
The answer that you don't want is partially the answer you just might get. You mention in your question that you think gay people are "great and as fun as anybody else." This really has nothing to do with it as we will not be judged on how much we can entertain others, but the thoughts and desires of our hearts.
To understand Christians, if that is what you truely want to do, I would suggest at least reading the New Testament. There you will find that one of the important teachings is to do the will of the Father or to do the will of God. When Christians pray it is not to only to give thanks, or ask for those things that we need, but also to try to align our will with that of the Father.
One of the most fundamental parts of God's plan for us as his children is the Family unit, Father, Mother, and children. This is to be repeated generation after generation. Gay people, no matter how popular they are cannot continue this cycle, and in a way it is a sign of selfishness, ingratitude, and pride. These are all things that God does not like. People who choose to be gay are truely seeking after their own will and not that of the Father. As with many other topics, this is the root of sin, so it is not unique to "gays" but due to the powerful nature of the reproductive power you can see how offense can build quickly.
The only family unit that will be in Heaven will be that of Man and Woman as they are the only ones that can have increase. Man on Man or Woman on Woman cannot have increase.
There is greater detail to this, but I didn't think it would be appropriate for answers. See the sites below for more details.
Edit - To answer your edit. Yes, as long as Gay people do not act on the lifestyle they will be able to enter into covenants with the lord like baptism, etc. Even get married to a person of the oposite sex if they so choose, and then so obtain all the blessings the Lord has to offer them.
Yes, it is difficult to control your sexual urges until the time approved by God but that is what he asks of all of us. I am hetero, but did not have sex until I was married to my wife at the age of 23, and have not been with anyone else. I am now 32. That is what God asks of us, like I said before we need to use our self control and place our will in line with that of the Father. This goes with Alcohol, theft, idolotry, and everything else as well.
Edit again - Sorry, I just noticed that you mentioned vows of celibacy that too is not exactly what God had in mind. The goal is to get as many people to earth as possible. But that falls under sins of omission (not doing what you are supposed to do) instead of a sin of comission (doing what you are not supposed to) and is lesser in gravity. Bottom line, everyone should get married.
