The official name of the order was "The Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Jerusalem". Their seal showed two knights on one horse symbolizing both brotherhood and poverty. Like most religious orders of the day they lived lavishly and opulently but justified calling themselves poor by saying the none of the Knights actually owned anything, it all belonged to the Order and they were just using it.

The Knights Templar were the original Hell's Angels. Sonny Barger attempted to sue them for copyright infringement in 1969. He lost the case but won the war since there were no longer any Templars around to lay claim to the title.
They were rich, rich, fabulously rich.

The Pope, when Innocent II recognized the Order in the Papal Bull of 1139 "Omne Datum Optimum" he gave made them, unlike other militant orders, independent of secular authorities in the lands in which they traveled or lived. Their privileges were increased in 1144 and 1145 by Pope Celestine II in the Bulls "Milites Tempi" and "Militia Dei" which made them, essentially, a border-less independent Nation answerable only to the Pope himself or, at least on paper, the Head of the Cistercian Monastic Order of which they were nominally a part. Additionally, in order to join the order one had to be a Landed Nobleman or Knight and when one joined all the lands became the property of the Order, making them both extremely wealthy and granting them political connections throughout Europe and the Middle East. These widespread holdings and connections combined with their centralized power structure allowed them to create what was, in many ways, the first International Banking System and to establish their own mercantile fleet. That gave them extremely powerful militarily, financially, and politically, and they had God and Pope on their side as well. This made them a big enough threat that King Phillip of France moved against them in 1307 leading to the order being officially dissolved in 1312 by Pope Clement V.

The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon (Latin: Pauperes commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici), commonly known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple .

The Knights Templar's actual name was "Knights of the Temple of Zion" & they took a vow of poverty but the order was very rich indeed. That's why they were betrayed by King Phillip the Fair of France who accused them of heresy to the Pope; he coveted their money & properties.

You only need to watch "The Maltese Falcon" to know that they were rich. But, a trivia contest in which people have access to Google is kind of silly.

They were also known as the Gay Troubidours.
(That was back when "gay" meant something else--men who loved high-backed shoes.)
