Question:
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH "HAPPY HOLIDAYS" OR "SEASONS GREETINGS" ALL OF A SUDDEN?
2008-12-25 14:05:36 UTC
Take a look at some antique Christmas Cards and you will find HAPPY HOLIDAYS and SEASONS GREETINGS abound all over the place, and everyone was happy. Nowadays say HAPPY HOLIDAYS instead of MERRY CHRISTMAS and people just about bite your head off. My God, people, are you so insecure in your believes that saying, or even hearing, something other than MERRY CHRISTMAS is enough to engage your persecution complex? It's not like HAPPY HOLIDAYS or SESONS GREETINGS in a new thing. IJR always felt the HOLIDAYS included Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Only recently did IJR realize that it could be extended to mean whatever holiday someone celebrates, weather its, SATURNALIA, YULE, WINTER SOLSTICE, HANNUAKAH, KWANZAA or even FESTIVUS.

I agree. I hope you had a Merry Christmas. There are many uneducated and stubborn people in this world. Just over look them sweety. No reason to be miserable and angry with them.

ha ha! Yeah, I had a friend try to make me wish her a " Merry Christmas" and I wouldn't do it, I said , I hope you have a good holiday! How would Christmas celebrators feels if everyone they saw said " Happy Hanukkah" to them! It annoys me that during the Xmas season that everyone has to say " Merry Christmas" with the expectation that you must celebrate Christmas and they get angry if you won't say it. Since there are several holidays celebrated by different cultures or religions at this time, it is just more respectful to wish a Happy Holiday especially if you don't know for sure what holiday they even celebrate.

Probably because businesses trying to be "politically-correct" decided that Merry Christmas was not acceptable, but Happy Holidays was. Just like there are Christians who don't like Happy Holidays, there are Atheists who don't like Merry Christmas. Just look at the woman who got fired in Florida for answering the phone with Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays. Apparently you aren't human unless you take offense at something.

Must be an American thing, we have no problem in the UK with saying Merry Christmas, enjoy your holiday or happy new year.

I have seen Season's Greetings written but never heard any one actually say it.

There is an 97 year old man who lives near me. He reckons that there are too many people about with not enough to do so they make things up to show that they are doing something useful. He is probably right.

I absolutely agree. :)

Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings are NOT a form of persecution of Christianity. They're just inclusive greetings that acknowledge and respect the *fact* that there is way more than one holiday being celebrated at this time of year. I don't get all pissy if someone tells me Merry Christmas even if I don't celebrate it; I accept that the person is wishing me well and respond in kind.

But if someone jumps down my throat and tells me their god is the only "reason for the season" in that snotty, holier-than-thou tone, I may feel obligated to remind them of the season's pagan roots, and put to rest their misconception that the Pagan religions are "dead religions." ;)

Hello,

As in many situations throughout history and the rest of the world there are always the possibilities of backlashes. True in what you say about the past history of Christmas cards but unfortunately over the last 25 years the politically correct police from department stores to the government tried pushing all their employees to kow tow and brown nose to all cultures, creeds or no creeds to drop the Merry Christmas, not put up mangers, and insist on calling Christmas Trees holiday trees even though 70% of our western populations are Christians. I guess it got to the point where enough is enough and its time to pay the piper in the minds of many.

Cheers,

Well, JR, not a dam thing is wrong with those greetings, nor ever will be.

The problem arises when someone INSISTS that ONLY such greetings may be used. Nobody had a problem with "Happy Holidays" until SOMEBODY began trying to ban the word Christmas from the holiday season.

SO, TO YOU AND YOURS, AND ANYBODY ELSE WHO MIGHT READ MY ANSWER:

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

AND GOD BLESS US, EVERY ONE!!!!

"They are trying to remove Christ from Christmas so they are changing the greetings"

This sort of answer shows how effective the bogus "War on Christmas," a money-making scheme by televangelists and others of their stripe, has been. When Christ said "Feed my sheep," I doubt he wanted them fed on offal.

Oh--and you are welcome to wish this non-Christian a Merry Christmas any time you like. Your friendly greeting is appreciated and will be repeated.

It's the same people who accuse others of following pagan customs during Christmas.

They've got a wire brush up their bums, and every now and then they give it a twist.

Persecution complex. It's popular, especially among Christians.

Ramadan is not a holiday. You'd be discriminating against Muslims.

IJR - None of it is wrong. None of it. I'll greet anyone any way they like.

All the best to ya this season, whichever way you celebrate it :-)

you're the one biting our heads off, I think.

and I don't know who you're talking about, to be honest.

No one has ever gotten mad at me for saying merry christmas or happy holidays.

Everyone seems to be overly politically correct or overly sensitive to being offended.

Holidays should be merry.

Christmas should be happy.

Nobody gets it right.
2008-12-25 14:13:14 UTC
some christians think they own the entire season.... something about claiming jesus is the reason for it... silly

2008-12-25 14:08:32 UTC

They are trying to remove Christ from Christmas so they are changing the greetings.
