The claim is that we have finite abilities and finite lives and can only do a finite amount of wrong. This is generally true in the physical sense of causing harm (though one can imagine a scenario in which a person's action knowingly triggers a series of events that causes the maximum possible harm to the universe), but not necessarily true in the spiritual sense. Our souls are not temporally finite but continue to exist after death, so we are not completely finite. Sin negatively affects our relationship with God by distancing us from him, and if we never repent and follow God, that negative effect continues as long as both we and God exist, i.e. forever. Since the sinner and the results of the sin continue forever, it makes sense that the sinner's punishment also continues forever.

For what it's worth ... A misconception about hell is that it is a place of physical torment and torture. Rather, most Christians have understood these descriptions to capture symbolically that hell is final and utter separation from God's saving grace. Similarly, thinking of heaven as a place of hedonistic pleasures is wrongheaded as well. In fact, those who choose hell would not enjoy the pleasures of heaven since those pleasures essentially flow from a right relationship with God.

The word translated as "eternity" is often the word that means "a long time." References to "hell" in the bible are not described as eternal, but the illusion stuck, even though Judaism has no such hell, and Jesus would not have believed in the Christian version of hell.

See http://judaism.about.com/od/orthodoxfaqenkin/f/satan.htm and numerous other references on the subject:

< Jewish tradition does not subscribe to an independent, and certainly not, a permanent place of punishment, known as Hell. We don't believe in eternal punishment. Judaism teaches that after someone dies, the soul goes through an 11 month 'cleansing' process in order to prepare it for it's place in Heaven.

Hope this helps!

The teaching that hell is eternal is a false doctrine taught to increase the Churches power. In the Bible access to the tree of life is blocked in Genesis and not allowed till after the wicked are destroyed in Revelation.

He DID have compassion on man. That is why he came to earth as a human , Jesus and made that payment for sin. But one MUST accept His free gift of eternal salvation bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus. Many are deceived thinking living a good life will merit heaven for them . If we could earn heaven then why did Jesus suffer so much, shed His innocent blood and die a wrongful death on the cross for then ?

Christians: Do you REALLY believe god would allow ANYONE to roast in hell for an eternity?

I would have nothing to do with such a God.Eternity here means a long long time.People go to hell and under go punishment according to the gravity and quantum of their sins and are released there after.Otherwise, the world population would go on decreasing.

In Hebrew there is a word Sheol (שׁאל שׁאול) which means grave/tomb/pit and in Greek there is Gehenna (γέεννα) which means "dumping yard" which are mistranslated to mean "Hell" (in the sense of a place of eternal torture).

God is not a sadist. He will eliminate those who are not loyal, but not torture them eternally.

You're so right! I have this argument with my Christian friend all the time.

"Everyone who doesn't believe Jesus is the one and only is going to Hell"...then WHY did God create humans of other religions? Why did He choose this select group of people (Christians) to believe in Jesus by default, giving them an advantage over the Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus and Atheists? Why not just create us all, already believing in Jesus? Free Will, you say? Then how come with this Free Will there's really only one path we are supposed to take? Why do we HAVE to believe in Jesus otherwise face an eternity burning in Hell, because that's not Free Will, that's manipulation.

This is why I do NOT want ANYTHING to do with religion. It breeds closed-minded, ignorant, hypocritical sheep and witch-burners.

God supplies us all a call, and if somebody rejects Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they have desperate they could somewhat stay their very own way somewhat of taking area in the existence that Jesus died for us to have. God won't tension every person to have self assurance or receive Jesus, yet He has accomplished each little thing He necessary to do for us to have and revel in eternal existence. the affection and mercy is displayed by Jesus; who died a unfavourable dying, and spent 3 days and nights in hell to pay the excellent fee for our sin. no one knows the entire bible, and you purely could be conscious of that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the go for our sin. as quickly as we are born returned, God can practice us His word via the Holy Spirit. examine what the bible says in Romans a million:19-20; through fact this for sure says no one is with out excuse; seeing we've God's creation as a desirable witness of the certainty of God. additionally, all of us is born with an inward prefer to be conscious of God, yet we've an enemy, devil, who's doing each little thing attainable to be sure we don't be conscious of God, or His way of salvation; that's Jesus ( John 14:6 ). in actual certainty, we don't have the skill or know-how to question God or His approaches; seeing Isaiah fifty 5:8-9 says God's approaches and innovations are some distance above ours. What you and that i won't be conscious of is the heart of the individuals who bypass to hell. they're depraved at heart, which skill even nonetheless they'd see God's handiwork by creation, many have self assurance technology over God and alter into deceived. people who bypass to hell have a hardened heart complete of unbelief; which God warns us approximately in Hebrews 3:12-13. Romans 10:8-10 is attainable for every person who desires to be born returned, and all who call upon the call of the Lord would be saved! See Romans 10:13. the respond on your quesion is this: 2 Peter 3:9 says, The Lord isn't slack appropriate to his promise, as some adult adult males count variety slackness; yet is longsuffering to us-ward, no longer prepared that any could perish, yet that each you could still come to repentance. the only suitable determination is often on somebody foundation appropriate to Jesus; god won't determine for us.

I dont worry about it because common sense tells me there is no hell, no devil, no such nonsense whatsoever. God, being good, would never allow it. It is a man-made belief, that's all

You do not have to go there. God made a way for you to avoid damnation. All one has to do is swallow his pride and quit making himself the lord over his own life and make Jesus His Lord. Simple? Yes indeed.

I bet many people did not think that the flood would not come either. Noah built the arch in 125 years or so. I believe the story of Noah is foretelling us about up coming judgment.

Modern people inevitably think that hell works like this: God gives us time, but if we haven't made the right choices by the end of our lives, he casts our souls into hell for all eternity. As the poor souls fall through space, they cry out mercy, but God says "To late! You had your chance! Now you will suffer!" This caricature misunderstand the very nature of evil. The Biblical picture is that sin separates us from the presence of God, which is the source of all joy and indeed of all love, wisdom, flourish, and achieve our highest potential. If we were to lose his presence totally, that would be hell, the loss of our capability for giving or receiving love or joy.

A common image of hell in the Bible is that of fire. Fire disintegrates. Even in this life we can see the kind of soul disintegration that self-centeredness creates. We know how selfishness and self-absorption leads to piercing bitterness, nauseating envy, paralyzing anxiety, paranoid thoughts, and the mental denials and distortions that accompany them. What if we die we don't end, but spiritually our life extends on into eternity? Hell, then, is the trajectory of a soul, living a self-absorbed, self-centered life, going on and on forever. Jesus' parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man in Luke 16 supports the view of hall I'm presenting here. Lazarus is a poor man who begs at he gate of the cruel rich man. They both die and Lazarus goes to heaven while the rich man goes to hell. There he looks up and sees Lazarus in heaven "in Abraham's bosom":

"So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" See Luke 16:24-31.

Commentators have noted the astonishing amount of denial, blame-shifting, and spiritual blindness in this soul in hell. They have noted that the rich man, unlike Lazarus, is never given a personal name. He is only called a "Rich Man," strongly hinting that since he had built his identity on his wealth rather than on God, once he lost his wealth he lost any sense of self. In short, hell is simply one's freely chosen identity apart from God on a trajectory to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and pornography. First, there is disintegration, because as time goes on you need more and more of the addictive substance to get an equal kick, which leads to less and less satisfaction.

Second, there is the isolation, as increasingly you blame others and circumstances in order to justify your behavior. "No one understands! Everyone is against me!" is muttered in greater and greater self-pity and self-absorption. When we build our lives on anything but God, that thing, though a good thing, becomes an enslaving addiction, something we have to have to be happy. Personal disintegration happens on a broader scale. In eternity, this disintegration goes on forever. There is increasing isolation, denial, delusion, and self-absorption. When you lose all humility you are out of touch with reality. No one ever asks to leave hell. The very idea of heaven seems to them a sham.

In his fantasy 'The Great Divorce,' C.S. Lewis describes a busload of people from hell who come to the outskirts of heaven. There they are urged to leave behind the sins that have trapped them in hell, but they refuse. Lewis' description of these people are striking because we recognize in them the self-delusion and self-absorption that are 'writ small' in our addictions. "Hell begins with a grumbling mood, always complaining, always blaming others... but you are still distinct from it. You may even criticize it in you self and wish you could stop it. But there may come a day when you can no longer. Then there will be no you left to criticize the mood or even to enjoy it, but just the grumble itself, going on forever like a machine. It is not a question of God 'sending us' to hell. In each of us there is something growing, which will be hell unless it is nipped in the bud."

The people in hell are miserable, but Lewis shows us why. We see raging like unchecked flames their pride, their paranoia, their self-pity, their certainty that everyone else is wrong, that everyone else is an idiot! All their humility is gone, and thus so is their sanity. They are utterly, finally locked in a prison of their own self-centeredness, and their pride progressively expands into a bigger and bigger mushroom cloud. They continue to go to pieces forever, blaming everyone but themselves. Hell is that, writ large.

That is why it is a travesty to picture God casting people into a pit crying "I'm sorry! Let me out!" The people on the bus from hell in Lewis' parable would rather have their 'freedom,' as they define it, they would somehow lose power and freedom, but in a supreme and tragic irony, their choice has ruined their own potential for greatness. Hell is, as Lewis says, "the greatest monument of human freedom." As Romans 1:24 says, God "gave them up to... their desires." All God does in the end with people is give them what they most want, including freedom from himself. What could be for fair than that? Lewis writes: "There are only two kinds of people, those who say 'Thy will be done' to God or those to whom in the end says, 'Thy will be done.' All that are in Hell choose it. Without that self-choice it wouldn't be Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desire joy will ever miss it."
