I'm not an expert in English history of this period so my facts may be incorrect. The Church of England was the official religion when the English ruled in Ireland. The Irish resisted just as any country would resist an occupation. They clung to their faith in a dark time. Masses went underground. They were performed in secret because of the harsh penalties. Can you imagine what would happen if the same thing was tried in Iraq or Afghanistan?

The problems between the English and the Irish are historical. The Roman Catholic and Anglican churches are very similar in their beliefs and rituals. At the time of the split the only difference was that the king is the head of the Church of England while the RC Church is headed by the Pope. Head to the library's history section if you want to know what happened. Take note of books by both sides to get a balanced view.

The word Papist took on its derogatory connotations during the Protestant Reformation. Using it today continues the hostility. I'm not even Catholic and I consider it too offensive to use.

you forget or probably don't know that the king of england was catholic at the time the pope gave him leave to go to Ireland. This was before the England became Protestant so that henry could remarry.

yes Papist is a very good word to use if you are a bigot.

I see why you are a bigot it is Pure ignorance.

I'm Irish Catholic,And If you like I can tell you all about the English Civil war . where the Revolt of the protestants slaughtered 10,s of thousands of woman and children because they would not turn Protestant. They went on to call them selves Puritans and continued the Blood shed of the Natives and that Is your Ancestors, Your religion had it's Baptism in Blood.

The Pope, for one, didn't give England authority over England because England broke away from the Catholic Church and abandoned its, at the time, 1500+ year-old teachings. Ireland has been Catholic since St. Patrick converted it hundreds of years ago and still remain to the One True Church Matthew 16:18-19 that actually wrote the Bible, if you didn't know that too. If I were you I would research all of Christian History.

Cool to be Roman Catholic!

Cultural identity and social inertia.

Oh, that dominion was granted in 1155 by Pope Adrian IV to Henry II. At that time, England was still thoroughly Catholic (and the King of England carried the title "Defender of the Faith.") The Anglican split wouldn't occur for another 350-odd years. After that, the Crown Ireland Act granted the title King of Ireland to the King of England, and the occupation continued.

First; Using "Papist" for Catholics is intended as an insult as much as the "n-word" for Black People, so that shows your moral level and equivalent right there. That said:

Ireland was given to England BEFORE "Hank the 8th" broke from the Catholic Church because he wanted a divorce that the Pope wouldn't allow.

Secondly, the Christian Church forced the conversion to the Catholic Religion on most of the Irish in the first place, so its their own fault anyway.

The "Sun Never Set On The British Empire"..... because the gods didn't trust the English in the dark!

England converted Ireland from the Celtic church (it did not recognise Rome) to the Roman Catholic church. So I suppose all the Irish Catholics should thank England. Whenever England became Protestant the Church of Ireland (Anglican) was formed but not many of the Catholics signed up. I suppose too much change is a bad thing!

I think 800 years of English rule might not count as England winning. But they didn't break your spirit!

I'm pretty sure the Pope didn't demand that all people in England be forced to be Anglican. I'm really not sure what your point here is. For people like you, I prefer the term "Ignorant". England also now allows freedom of religion. Shocking, I know.

Suggestion: go to Belfast, stand in the middle of a busy street, make an ignorant, bigoted statement like this one, and see what happens next.

First, though, you might want to fill out a manila envelope with your name and address and enough stamps to ship 12 ounces. I doubt that it'll take any more postage than that to send your remains home.

Most people in Ireland are Catholic because our ancestors decided not to change to protestant religions. Just because the king of england changed religions doesn't mean that the Irish had to . You have to remember as well that the Irish were not British and never were they hated the British our ancestors weren't going to change their religion for them and they taught us to be catholic and i will do the same for my children

I have a tendency to examine with Catholics as Catholics. i won't be able to be afflicted with degrading slurs hostile to a set of those who trust that what they are doing is ideal. I disagree with many Catholic doctrines, and could brazenly accuse the Papacy of diverse counts of blasphemy. besides the indisputable fact that, those who attend mass each and every Sunday are authentic of their beliefs and that i will not make interesting of or belittle that. even as i'm satisfied to provide advice as to why I disagree with Catholicism, i'm no longer prone to hunch so low as to sling infantile slurs.

When did the pope do that? Oh you mean when that witch Queen Elizabeth the first, who killed every priest that didn't kiss her *** and call her the supreme religious ruler in England, sacked Ireland and tried to destroy etheryone who didn't follower said she was the ruler of Ireland. Get a life. All English protestants are stuck on themselves.

Well we Irish Catholics preferred to be called CATHOLICS because that is what we are and proud to be Catholic, we are not living in the 15th century and martin Luther/Tudor Era unlike some people I could mention.

We Irish Catholics are Catholic because we choose to be Catholic because that is our choice of faith and theology and we didn't relinquish our faith because of Henry 8th and what was his quest for a Son or for martin Luther and his Sola scripture.

Oh dear you have annoyed someone. As an Anglican I prefer to use the name Church of Rome and do not recognise it as having any jurisdiction on religious matters in England. I don't like the word Papist because I prefer to regard the Pope at worst as a misguided friend and not Satan's agent here on Earth
