The organization 'American Atheists' that claims to represent atheism in the US is opposed to Christmas and New Year being a federal holiday in the US.

Do you atheists agree with their stance at all?

American Atheists is a militant atheist group. They do not represent all atheists.

I have noticed a tendency for people to be nicer to each other over the Christmas

holidays than most any other time of year.

But mid winter is such a silly time for the big family gatherings.

People spend weeks buying presents and then have to travel long distances

in bad weather to see friends and family. Often they were days late or couldn't make it at all.

Then the big let down after the Christmas orgasm.

For a month, now two, every year you hear the same stories, hear

the same tired songs, put up with the old routine of the tree, presents,

and Christmas myths. I'm glad when it is over.

Not really even though I am pretty hard core on separation of church and state. Christmas has become meaningless as a national holiday because of the commercialization of it. Now it is just a long winter break for most and a shopping spree for others. If it still had meaning I would be against it, but now it only really matters to nuts who believe in the "war against Christmas," you know, those who were silent when things like Roudolph, Macy's, and popular music " white Christmas, grandma got run over, jinglebells, etc) made it a moneymaking event.

The real question is whether atheists oppose the US being a county founded on Christian principles. No....they just want to siphon the good of this country and take the rest down with us

While i'm all for a day off, i do not support out governments choice to acknowledge these delusions. National holidays should be the only one celebrated by the federal and state governements.

Nobody represents all Atheists. Just saying Happy Holidays and getting a day off work is good enough for me.

hahhah------ come to Australia because we get 4 or 5 weeks paid annual leave plus 10 to 12 public holidays depending on what state are you in. If the prime minister farted then there will be additional holiday.

I am opposed to designating the holy days of one particular religion as federal holidays. I am not opposed to having a generalized winter holiday period for citizens to use as we see fit.

I figure that simply makes the day secular, or it would violate the establishment clause of the Constitution. If that's not what the religious want, it is they who should have an issue with it being federally recognized.

Personally I'd like to see a national system where a person gets to choose 8 or 9 days off in a calendar year, for whatever reason they like. Jews get christmas off but not Rosh Hashanna. That's not quite fair is it?

I get good friday off, but I don't get Sagan's birthday off. Is that fair to me? No.

No, its a nice break and I still do the tree and presents as a family tradition. That holds true for most atheists I know.

what about easter ( jesus's resurrection) or valentines day (feast day of st. valentine, he was a martyr who wrote letters to people signed, your valentine) or Halloween ( original "all hallows eve day" day to celebrate the lives of the saints.) most these holidays were Christian holidays that were twisted a little for pagans.

I don't "celebrate" christmas as a christian holiday, but as a family gathering and a great nosh up.

As an atheist who was once employed by a government agency, I am all for a day off. Don't care what the reason for it is. :P

Christmas is cultural rather than religious. Remember that is was pagan first.

Anyways, I like Christmas. I'd celebrate Hanukkah as well if my community was Jewish.

Meh I don't even celebrate Christmas I just sit on my butt or I work if I get called in.
