Question:
Atheists and antitheists, I am seriously considering switching sides and becoming a Christian?
2009-09-29 10:54:06 UTC
Are Christians the only thing standing between us and being on our knees on a prayer mat five times a day?

Sometimes it is better to side with an enemy in order to combat a greater enemy.

I am an antitheist and I think I agree with Democrats and liberals on a lot of things, but not all. I've seen a lot of answers on this forum that indicate to me that Christian Republicans recognize the threat that the Muslim religion represents to America and its people.

Things are getting out of hand.

It may be time to make a final choice and get to work.

Is there anyone out there who thinks that the Muslim religion and it's adherants is the greatest threat to the freedom and safety of the United States and its citizens that exists?

Are you Republican, Democrat, liberal, Christian, atheist, antitheist, Buddhist, or what?

How do you feel about these people and their religion?

I won't pull any punches, call me what you will, I don't give a sh*t.

I don't like them.

I think they are dangerous.

If I had my way, I would send them all back to wherever they came from.

I am ex-military, and I would do anything to keep the people of the United States safe from harm.

ANYTHING.

Anyone out there who agrees with some or all of what I just said?

What is your religious or political association?

I am seriously considering switching sides...

I don't understand why you think you have to belong to a religion to fight a religion. I can dislike and disagree with the muslims and Islam without having to be part of any religious organization. I can choose to research the ownership of motels before I spend a night there. I have the freedom to walk out of an indian owned convenience store and go down the street to an Allsups or a Toot-n-Totum which are part of a corporate chain and not individually owned by middle east muslims. Now choosing a doctor that isn't from the mid east has been a problem. Anyway, I'm atheist and I do not think you need to compromise your beliefs to fight a terroristic faith. Unlike christians, we atheists are less like to turn the other cheek. We are more apt to put a boot up someones @$$.

Politically, I'm a conservative republican and my boss is the republican chairman for our county. Being his secretary is one of my duties. I am also responsible for organizing the elections in our county.

1. Isn't an antitheist an atheist? Seriously, I am confused by what the difference is!

2. I know several Muslims and their portrayal in our media is WAY OFF base. I don't beleive in the religion but the reality is, it's no different than the bible (bring on the TD'S!).

3. So you start kicking out all the muslims. Then you get bored. Who's next? It wouldn't stop there....people will be after each other looking for someone to kick around. That goes against a nation that supposedly stands for freedom.

The spread of fundamentalist Islam is a serious threat, but so far, just a threat - it is a long way from reducing US citizens to being forced onto prayer mats, as you put it. The threat of fundamentalist Christianity is just as real, and already right here in the states. I'm not talking about your average cuddly Republican theocratic cheerleader - I'm talking about people who believe that blasphemy should be punishable by death, and that women are the property of men. So if you're worried about the spread of fundamentalist Islam (which is a legit fear), please don't forget to be afraid of the fundamentalist Christians, too.

Also, don't forget two other things -

- There are liberal and moderate Muslims who favor socially progressive, secular governments and freedom of religion. Their voices are drowned out by the fanatics on their side, and ignored by the fanatics on the other side. They do not deserve to be punished for what others do in the name of the same religion.

- Ideas do not die out with the use of force. The only way to ensure that an idea will probably die out with the use of force is to kill every single adherent to that idea. Do you actually want to kill every single Muslim? The far better method is to kill the idea with education, or restrain it with secular and progressive controls. So, instead of fighting extremist Muslims, you ought to be connecting with and supporting liberal and progressive Muslims who are trying to change their culture for the better.

I don't know you, so please forgive the presumption, but it sounds like you have some irrational fears and prejudices against Muslims. They are hardly "at the gates" yet.

I'm an atheist, and a registered Democrat - but I like to think I'm to the left of the Democrats.

The Christian faith's hands are stained with much more blood than Islam. I descend from Scandinavians, who fought a genocide attempt from the Vatican for 400 years, with the Muslims joining my ancestors in their struggle.

At one point in time, Islam was composed of open-minded scholars who preserved many texts that the Christians would have destroyed. Times have changed, but the current trends aren't set in stone. It's very possible that the current ultra-conservative trend in the faith of Islam may change in times to come. Thus it isn't right to say that the faith itself is dangerous. Even today, it's only a minority of its representatives that are dangerous. And that's no different than any other faith. Christianity has its extremists as well, such as the Klu Klux Klan.

In essence, we can't blame Islam as a whole for the actions of some extremists. Even this conception of Islam as a terrorist-supporting religion will fade with time. It's not Islam that's dangerous. It's religion itself, when in the hands of those who would abuse it and use it as a weapon.

The only thing that stands between us and the muslims is americas/russias/chinas/isreals 20 Megaton Yield Nuclear Warhead Aimed at the Kaaba.

Also you do not need to become a christian in order to fight the Muslim threat. Just Uncover the lies and stand up against this Invaders.

You are dead right Satan I have thought about this very seriously also. Islam is the biggest threat of all. We must fraternize with all other less dangerous religions. If only for the meantime.

Religion, like drinking alcohol, is best in moderation. It isn't just the extremist muslims that pose a threat, but the extremists of any religion, it's unfair to single out one religion for extremist acts as the media would have people believe, extremists of any religion, by their very nature are mental midgets that have no concept of rational behavior.

I would never insist that you believe what I do to stand beside me..

Welcome to Dar Al Harb..That would be all of us non believers of Islam..

People here don't seem to understand that Islam is not interested in assimilation with people of differing beliefs...It's all about conquest and dominance.

So how do you start believing in god? If it's that easy, you were never an atheist to begin with. I view all religions as dangerous...some, like muslim fundamentalists, are more dangerous than others, but they all should be destroyed with logic, reason, and education. Ignorance should never be tolerated.

They will not accept you your true atheist nature will betray you. That doesn't mean that you have to disagree on political issues.

I think the worst threat to the USA is our own Prohibition laws that create the Lucrative Illegal Drug Market that ALLOWS TERRORISTS TO SURVIVE. I.E. POPPY FIELDS IN AFGHANISTAN.

Mexico's Drug cartel is a huge potential threat to the US. LEGALIZE ALL DRUGS AND LET PEOPLE BEWARE WHAT THEY PUT INTO THEIR BODIES OR WHO THE GO OUT WITH.

Well the only way we are going to stop an entire ideal system is not through wars but your education. We need to show them why their views are incorrect, and give them a better understanding of scientific discoveries we have made.

Ranting aside, what would make you think that you need to join the ranks of Christians to fight islamic fundamentalists?

--------------

Nice way to bring out the true colors of the all the christians answering this question with a cheer, though.
2009-09-29 10:58:02 UTC
No.

Even if an alliance of sorts WERE necessary to prevent the spread of Islamofascism, no sane person can, through sheer force of will, FORCE himself to believe something he knows to be patently absurd.

Besides which, Christians have demonstrated throughout history that, given free rein, there's about a dime's worth of difference between themselves and the Muslim fundamentalists in terms of oppressing freedom of thought and action.

I'm not about to clear the playing field just so they can run roughshod over our freedoms.

The only real existential threat that terrorists pose to us is by getting us to change who we are in response to them.

If you "switch sides" the terrorists have already won.

How would being a Christian make you better able to keep the US safe?
2009-09-29 11:00:29 UTC
Hellllll no!

You're just choosing what is the lesser of two evils in your opinion.

Be brave and take the path you think is right, not which is easier.
