Family, society and ultimately the whole of mankind is treated by Islam on an ethical basis. Differentiation in sex is neither a credit nor a drawback for the sexes. Therefore, when we talk about status of woman in Islam it should not lead us to think that Islam has no specific guidelines, limitations, responsibilities and obligations for men. What makes one valuable and respectable in the eyes of Allah, the Creator of mankind and the universe, is neither one's prosperity, position, intelligence, physical strength nor beauty, but only one's Allah-consciousness and awareness (taqwa). However, since in the Western culture and in cultures influenced by it, there exists a disparity between men and women there is more need for stating Islam's position on important issues in a clear way.

Dr. Jamal Badawi's essay, The Status of Women in Islam, was originally published in our quarterly journal, Al-lttihad, Vol. 8, No. 2, Sha'ban 1391/Sept 1971. Since then it has been one of our most-demanded publications. We thank Br. Jamal for permitting us to reprint his essay. We hope it will clarify many of the misconceptions.

I'm not religious but I don't understand why women are so strong about having rights and they are also Christian. In The Koran it tells about Muhammad and how much he loved and respected his wife. He would not let her walk on the ground and get her feet dirty he would carry her. Also when Muslims get married the man is required to give his wife a gift for her hand in marriage. It can be any amount or any thing just depending on what he can afford. It has to be an amount that he and her agree on together. Also showing her value wise how important she is to him. This is her gift and she can do with it as she wants. The husband in no way can pressure his wife into making her spending this money. If the couple divorces and she still has her earn money left she gets to take it with her. If the wife collects on an inheritance from her family its hers to keep not her husband. If he collects or has any money at time of divorce he has to split it with her since the kids will go with her. This is because the wife's importance is on family and raising the kids. The religion answers about every question possible. You don't have to let a judge decide for you because the Koran tells you what to do -What great guidelines the book has. To the one that said Christians treat their wives good: have you read the Bible women are not equal but in the Koran it tells the man that the women is equal (the same) meaning he is not over her and doesn't belong to him she is her on person.

God's principles -- set out in the Bible -- have never changed.

True Christianity has never changed. In many cultures throughout the years, many women have been treated very poorly. That is due to man's choices, in total disregard for God's principles! The Bible has always taught that women are to be honored! For more information on the subject, here is a link to a great series of Bible-Based (not based on theories of men) articles on the subject:

Actually a true Christian man would love a woman as Christ loves the church.(That is enough to die for her). How could that ever been interpreted as bad treatment? Christians have never treated women badly.

Bad people treat women badly. It is not, nor was it ever a "Christian" doctrine to treat women badly. Thats just bad men who want to feel more powerful.

They still do treat women badly and cite the Bible which says men are the head of women and should dominate them.

The above answers are incorrect and do not reflect the true relationships between Christian men and women. The bible clearly treats women as inferior (and subsuquently any Christian men that do not treat women inferior to themselves are not good Christians) :

1 Corinthians, 14:34-35: "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church."

Genesis 3:16: "Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."

Leviticus 19:20: "And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free."

Exodus 21:7-8: And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her."

So as you can see above, according to the bible, women are inferior, they are for sale, and men can rape women if the woman is a slave. Not exactly a glowing recipe for gender equality.

The truth of the matter is that Christians pick and choose what to believe and what not to believe from the bible depending on the political climate of the time. There is no such thing as a Christian that follows the whole of the bible, and therefore there is no such thing as a real Christian.

*EDIT - The claims below regarding Christ showing equality to people is simply not true. Why dont people educate themselves on the things they claim to believe?

"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ." (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them." (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)

"The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. "But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given." [Jesus] (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)

Christ taught that all people were equal is the sight of God and should be Loved as you love yourself. in fact when Christ taught that women were equal it was one of the Charges made against him.

Christ was concerned that all people be treated with love respect and mercy.

reply for Ben: that Christians pick and choose what to believe and what not to believe from the bible depending on the political climate of the time. THIS STATEMENT IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. STRIPPING A SINGLE QUOTE FROM THE BIBLE TO SUPPORT A TWISTED DEMENING VIEWPOINT OF WOMEN IS PROOF OF THE SEED WHICH YOUR FRUIT IS FROM. YOU HAVE CAUGHT YOURSELF IN YOUR OWN NET. YOU DEAR BEN ARE GUILTY OF YOUR OWN CHARGE. GUESS THAT EDUCATION YOU SO HIGHLY VALUE IS NOT SO HIGH.

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. NOTICE FEMALE IS NOT UNDER MALE BUT WITH MALE SINCE BOTH ARE MAN. GODS WORD NOT MINE

Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: AGAIN GOD SPEAKS ABOUT THE VALUE OF WOMEN. IF WOMEN ARE OF LITTLE TO NO VALUE WHY WOULD GOD POUR OUT HIS SPIRIT ON THEM.

ESTHER: IS A BOOK NAMED AFTER A WOMAN. IT FORSHADOWS CHRIST

ANS SHOW US HOW TO DEAL WITH OPPRESSIVE MEN AND RULES.

RUTH: AGAIN A BOOK SHOWING US HOW EVERYBODY EVEN WHAT MAN CONSIDERS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW IS WORTHY NOT BY GENDER, RACE, COLOR BUT BY THE HEART, FAITH IN GOD.

King David; the bible further shows the sorrows that come when we fail to honor the women around us, when he failed to protect her by not judging her rapeist.

before christains women were not to worship with men. so Paul had to teach men & women how to assemble in order not to be diruptive to service.

BEN; IF REALLY WOULD STUDY THE BIBLE TO SEEK UNDERSTANDING YOU WILL FIND IT. YOU WILL THE KNOW "LINE UPON LINE AND PRECEPT UPON PRECEPT."

Man in his iniquity can not even follw the 10 commandment or just the 2 that Jesus said all the law & prophets hangs:

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment. Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

NEIGHBOR MEANS MALE & FEMALE, SLAVE OR FREE

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

For it is by the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ that we are saved even though we can not fulfill all the law.
