Is the Buddhist deity Yama more like Jesus or more like Satan in punishing evil people?

In the Pali canon, the Buddha states that a person who has ill-treated their parents, ascetics, holy persons, or elders is taken upon his death to Yama. Yama then asks the ignoble person if he ever considered his own ill conduct in light of birth, deterioration, sickness, worldly retribution and death (Māra). In response to Yama's questions, such an ignoble person repeatedly answers that he failed to consider the karmic consequences of his reprehensible actions and as a result is sent to a brutal hell "so long as that evil action has not exhausted its result“

That sounds similar to the traditional role of Satan, before Christians turned him into the villainous tempter.

Deities in Buddhism are not Gods. They are representations of states of mind.

Yama is a representation of death.



In Buddhism, there is no punishment.

But when WE harm others, we create imprints within ourselves that draw harmful people to us If we have problems it is because we have created ourselves to be someone who draws problems.

And we CAN change that.

Buddhism is agnostic. Orthodox Buddhism has no gods. Yama is a Hindu god, not a Buddhist one.

Nothing else pays for our sins, not works, not deeds, not religions. So the only way to heaven and to avoid hell, is by believing in Jesus for eternal life (John 6:47), without adding any of your own works (Romans 4:5). Believe in Jesus to take you to heaven, and you will be in heaven, no matter what, guaranteed. That easy, thanks to Jesus! Tell Jesus that you thank Him that you will be with Him in heaven when you die, because you believe in Jesus! It is too late to be saved, after death
