Is the Bible a dangerous book...why or why not?

Taking this from an answer I saw on another question. I don't see it as dangerous. As a matter of fact I find it quite amusing that someone would suggest that. Some interpretations might make it dangerous, but interpretations can make anything dangerous...for example: Beatle's songs (Charles Manson), Comets (Heaven's Gate cult), Dog barks (Son of Sam). If you make the choice to do something bad you can blame your wrong doing on your interpretation of just about anything, certainly the Bible would not be exempt.

So, if the Bible is dangerous...what makes it more dangerous than say, you employee handbook or a guide for Windows.

Anyone care to explain or discuss?

I agree that anything can be used for evil.



The Bible in the proper context tells us all about life, salvation, love, finances, realtionships, spiritaulity, etc. And it is all divine writings in my opinion.



So I say if read with a mind not hell-bent on twisting it around, it is not evil, but a book of love. Its actually a wedding story about a perfect bride (Eve) gone bad and a bad bride (sinner) made perfect (salvation through Jesus).

Unbelievers consider the Bible harmful because it says things they don't want to hear, and for others to read and believe it and live by it would be a negative thing.



I guess you could only consider the Bible dangerous if you were afraid of having your life and who you are radically changed - it is a scary thought, and even a scary experience sometimes, but soooo worth it...to say the change is for the better is the most stupefying understatement.



Honestly, if dangerous is people loving each other and giving and helping and showing compassion and speaking truth and putting away hate and murder and lying and stealing and adultery, etc...well, we need a lot more of that kind of danger.

It can be dangerous if there is no one to guide you. The Bible has been used to justify horrible things like slavery, polygamy, incest, wars, racism, etc. Even the devil uses scripture to test us. Read the temptation of Jesus in the gospels.

The Bible does not always teach. There are many statements in its various books that are there for historical, geographical, poetic or other reasons.

What I am really saying is that interpretation of the Bible should be left to the Church which was given the authority by Jesus Christ himself. That Church happens to be the Catholic Church. You will find it in the gospel of Matthew & Luke.

It is not a dangerous book as if there is magic in it that will curse or blast people right away who desecrate it, although it had happened occasionally. But it is a dangerous book it its warnings are not headed. This passage says:

“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (Luke 12:48).



It is dangerous to ministers or pastors who have the opportunity to study it better than other people and yet did not do it according to the light that has been given to them.

The Bible is one of the most dangerous and one of the most beneficial books in the world. It is dangerous because people can take it to literally. Messages of hate and violence while ignoring love thy neighbor. They will obsess over things that are purely symbolic awaiting the events in their lives. That is how it is a dangerous book. The high amount of violence in the Bible makes it a dangerous book. The flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, the first born sons of Egypt - all mass murder done by God, and that's just briefly mentioning the first two books.



Plus, one only needs to look at all the religious extremists today or the violent history of Christianity to conclude that the Bible is dangerous.

Yes, it's full of radical ideas like 'love your neighbor as yourself' and 'have absolutes and don't sit on the fence' and 'hate evil and love righteousness'. It even goes so far as to define righteousness and judge and compare our lifestyles in relation to it. Most people believe man is the origin of those kinds of judgments, so, yes, everyone hates to be told that absolutes come from outside themselves and that they must simply hear and obey. The Bible has no room for do-it-yourself morals, so it is considered subversive and dangerous.

It's dangerous because people site only the passages which support their point of view. Some of these incite predjudice & violence. The same weak-minded people who commit acts of violence because of the things you mention are open to all kinds of suggestions.

a book by itself is an inanimate object that cannot lift itself off a table and cause harm to anybody, and therefore, calling any book "dangerous" is absurd--however when somebody like Ed Gein uses the book to excuse killing, that person is dangerous--but the book itself can hardly be blamed

i dont think the Bible itself is dangerous, as a Christian the main theme is love,redemtion, and forgiveness.i think when people interpret the the Bible and any other book, in general- to control or manipulate people that's the problem.skewed perception and miguided motive are what the problems are. people kill people. books dont kill people

the bible is not dangerous. it can be for people who don't understand wat there reading. u must have an open mind and an understanding of wat those words mean before u are able to talk about it. if u don't understand the bible which is more complicated then u think then u will get wrong ideas.iam a Christian so i know.
