Question:
Why do some atheists ask me if I believe in witches?

That's a loaded question. Correct? It is asked deliberately to cast aspersions on the intellect of Christians. I do not believe in the sort of witches in cartoons. Of course not. That's just stupid. That question is asked with ulterior motives. It is asked to make Christians look silly, superstitious, naive, and gullible.

I know of several witches right here on this forum. Anyone ever heard of "Wicked Witch of the West?" She is a wonderful, sophisticated, sweet young lady. Am I just imagining that she exists? There are also a number of other witches. Do me a favor- go ahead and name some of them. Actually, these self proclaimed witches are good people. I have had communications with some of them, and they are wonderful, kind, honest people. So are these self proclaimed witches just figments of my imagination?

So why do some atheists ask this rather obtuse, loaded question, when it is clear that some people refer to themselves as witches? I don't call them that, they refer to THEMSELVES as such. So what's up with this nonsense about "Oh, do you really believe in witches?"

Atheists tend to think that magic and miracles are equal. Not so, since, miracles are from God and magic is decidedly not. It's not so far-fetched because atheists don't want to know that there is more to life than the physical and so understanding the difference between miracles and magic to them is of no consequence.

This is not a loaded question at all. They are referring to the witches referred to in the bible, you know, the ones you aren't supposed to 'suffer' to live. Christians believe that every syllable in the bible is the inerrant word of their god. Since your god told you to kill witches, then as a Christian, you have no choice to believe that witches are real and you also must kill them.

As we all know, many hundreds of thousands of people were burned as witches, both young children and the elderly. Of course, these killings were ordered by Christian leaders so they would not have occurred if they were not in accordance with the bible.

Of course, you may be one of those people who thinks they can pick and choose what they believe their god tells the to believe, but this makes you not a true Christian. Sorry, but I don't make the rules.

.....?

Really? After all those responses to your question and you focus on THAT? Do you have no sarcasm detector or something, or were you just trying to avoid all the legitimate points that contradicted you?

@Pastors-

Funny-

Miracle- an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause.

Magic- power or influence exerted through the art of producing a desired effect or result through the using supernatural agencies or the forces of nature.

Pretty much synonymous. From the definitions of the words, a "miracle" is just the event that occurs from "magic". You just don't LIKE the term because it correctly puts your beliefs on equal footing with any other supernatural superstitions.

people have diverse understandings of magic. some atheists think of "magic" is Harry Potter- Charmed - The Craft - Hocus Pocus form stuff and don't think in it. i don't blame them. some Wiccans and Witches are atheists. They comprehend that actual magic is extremely very very very diverse from the fiction-form magic, and that some magic isn't basically actual, yet shown via technology.

Erm, you may be a little oversensitive here. The bible says you must not suffer a witch to live and Christians have believed in witches throughout most of history. It is not unreasonable to think a Christian may believe in witches. I think it likely you also believe in angels and perhaps demons? Christianity is a belief in which belief in supernatural powers and beings is accepted. Why would this offend you? It is we who think belief in the supernatural is irrational. You do not and so should not be offended if we ask which biblical supernatural beings you do believe in?

Can't really add anything to what Acid Zebra said.....

By the way just because someone claims they're a witch it doesn't mean that they're actually a witch. If I say that I'm a magical talking unicorn will that make me a magical talking Unicorn?

Because they're being stupid and making a bad name for Atheists, they don't understand the difference between the religions, and they associate Christianity with Wickins.

In the future, just say "I'm not a Wickin, idiots, so no."

I think they meant 'do you believe witchcraft works'.

There is a strange subculture of people out there who call themselves 'vampires' and some even drink blood (google it) but obviously that doesn't make them actual vampires. Similarly the argument could be made that calling yourself a witch doesn't actually make you one.

the question is relevant because the bible orders the execution of witches (exodus 22:8), which is the reason why women, men and children have been persecuted and murdered by Christians since ancient times, and for various reasons. Today, the phenomenon of witch hunts is most widely spread among Protestant denominations in Africa.

And what do we burn, apart from witches?

And does this wonderful, sophisticated, sweet young lady you speak of weigh less than a duck, or did you just strap a carrot on her nose again?

You don't have to be Christian to know that there are people who follow that belief style. My aunt is a witch, on my mother's side. But I know she doesn't sacrifice cats or turn people into newts.

"How do you know she is a witch?" "She turned me into a newt! Well I got better"

Huh? Someone who claims to be a witch online isn't really a witch, buddy. It's just a username.

They suffer from a low self opinion likely, and must belittle others TI make themselves feel good. That potentially explains their whole belief system, but let's not talk about that...

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Perhaps they just want to know if you believe in that kind of foolish magic also.
2012-06-15 13:56:00 UTC
Why do you think that all atheists would know what one or two atheists think? I would need to know who said atheist is before I can read their mind.

Right, why not ignore everyone destroying your argument but instead focus on the one guy who made a joke.
