Christians, including Jehovah's Witnesses: What is heretical about the New World Translation?

What do you understand the word heretical to mean? And could you perhaps provide three scriptural examples for me to consider in my Bibles?

The problem with the question (for me) is that what is and is not classified as "heretical" is purely subjective.

I don't have a huge list of the sort

- Part A: List of Heretical Teachings

- Part B: List of Erroneous Teachings that are Not So Far Gone as to Be Considered Heretical

- Part C: List of Correct Teachings



As a Bible-believing Christian, the Bible itself is my guide - and though the Bible mentions a few teachings and practices that would definitely be considered heretical by a Bible-believing Christian, I don't know of any of those that can be found in the New World Translation.



Which isn't to say that I agree with all Witness teachings. There are several that I consider faulty.



And that also isn't to say that I find the New World Translation to be beyond reproach. The translators employed a few practices that are rightly criticized.



All that being said, I guess the only passage I can think of (and I've read most, not all, of the NWT) that comes close to "heresy" is John 1:1. Describing Jesus as "a god" instead of "God" seems directly contrary to what the Bible teaches...but I'm not very "draconian" about this particular issue. That is: I don't see how eternal salvation depends upon believing that Jesus is God. Even though **I** definitely believe that Jesus is God, and I believe that no other conclusion can **reasonably** be drawn from what the Bible teaches, it seems to me that salvation depends upon believing that Jesus is Lord and Savior. It seems to me that believing that Jesus is God, even though correct, is not essential to salvation.

Okay like it or not there are many "heretical" portions of the NWT ....



... it's not even contentious or argumentative to make such a statement because its literal a fact and here's why..



Here's a definition of "heretical"...



departure from accepted beliefs or standards

Something that departs from normally held beliefs (especially religious, political, or social norms) is heretical.

Holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted



So basically all we need to know is 1) what is generally accepted 2) what does the NWT show contrary.



Well since JWs don't believe in the Trinity and belief in the Trinity is the accepted, normal or commonly held belief (and has been through documented history of Christianity) then not believing Jesus is God is heretical.



In the NWT this is exemplified by "a god" and "all OTHER things were made"



More than that the NWT inserts "Jehovah" into the NT where there is ZERO evidence it ever was. This is clear when we know there are 5,000+ fragments and complete books of the NT but not one includes YHWH. Not one!



Then there's the small problem that YHWH isn't a FULL NAME and the fact we don't know God's FULL NAME. Blame this on the Jews, the Christians or little green men from Mars doesn't change the fact we don't know God's FULL NAME and if God wanted us to He could make sure we did!



Then there are a plethora of other examples.. like Luke 23:43, John 1:18, Acts 10:36; Romans 8:32; Phil. 2:9 and lots of others.

The New World Translation (NWT) is defined by the Jehovah's Witnesses’ parent organization (the Watchtower Society) as "a translation of the Holy Scriptures made directly from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into modern-day English by a committee of anointed witnesses of Jehovah." The NWT is the anonymous work of the “New World Bible Translation Committee.” Jehovah’s Witnesses claim that the anonymity is in place so that the credit for the work will go to God. So, rather than conforming their beliefs to Scripture, they altered Scripture to agree with their beliefs. The “New World Bible Translation Committee” went through the Bible and changed any Scripture that did not agree with Jehovah’s Witness theology. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that, as new editions of the New World Translation were published, additional changes were made to the biblical text. As biblical Christians continued to point out Scriptures that clearly argue for the deity of Christ (for example), the Watchtower Society would publish new editions of the New World Translation with those Scriptures changed. Well hello my inquisitive friend, the answer to the first part of your question is the definition of heretical. It means to "hold an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted"(Oxford Dictionaries). The information contained in the NWT has been thoroughly researched, and is confirmed by outside sources other then those who adhere to the JW's faith.

Like for instance, lets take Genesis 1:1 from the KJV Genesis 1:1King James Version (KJV)1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Then let's take Genesis 1:1 from NWT "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."



What I would suggest you do is to find time in your busy schedule to compare whatever current translation you read to the NWT and see if they agree with one another. The NWT is much easier to read (in my opinion),but I do often compare what I read in it to other translations. Do your homework on the basic teachings of JW's and see if they make sense.

For example God's name is Jehovah found at Psalms 83:18. God sent Jesus to die for us found at John 3:16.

The mainstream 99% christians have rejected the nwt as heretical. The catholics n protestant church have their reasons: one is that jw are remnants of the arianism which was forever anathematized in about 300AD. When the teachings at that time was declared in error and heretical, it could not be corrected when jw twist around and say it is right: the premise and false teachings by virtue of being anathematized since day 1 could not be corrected ever; it remains false and heretical forever, ab initio.

Nothing. Unless you, as several do, consider being able to read and understand the words in the sentences is heretical. That is how many view it. They cling to English, 400 years old and an ocean away.



Trouble is, they never THINK about the original languages Bible writers wrote in were Hebrew and Greek! No English language existed for 3100-1900 years later. Absolutely no Bible writer knew of it.

Instead of hiding or covering over any part of the Bible, the NWT works to make everything clear. For example: the Lord's Prayer at Matthew 6:9 in the KJV GOES, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name." What is "hallowed"? The NWT renders it plainly, "Our Father in heaven, let your name be sanctified." The margin notes refer to Ezekiel 36:23 for God's name to be sanctified in the same sentence as "the nation's will have to know that I am Jehovah."



This makes the main theme of the Bible clearly apparent: for the divine name of God to be made known and used by everyone.



When dealing with the KJV and the Revised KJV, one can easily see the difference. In the ancient manuscripts, the divine name of Almighty God, Jehovah, is found over 7,000 Times. Reduced in the KJV to only FOUR TIMES. Further reduced to ZERO in the Revised KJV. For all those making noise about the NWT making it in modern languages WE use today, how about a little concern over hiding the divine name completely?



John 17:3 states, "This is life eternal, that they might KNOW thee the ONLY true God, AND Jesus Christ, whom THOU has SENT." (KJV)



Or as the NWT translates it, "This MEANS everlasting life, their taking in (ACCURATE) Knowledge of you, the ONLY TRUE God, AND (or BOTH) the one you SENT forth, Jesus Christ."



Yrs, I put the "all caps" into each for emphasis, as well as what is in parenthesis. BOTH say The same meanings. It takes gaining ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE of BOTH Almighty God, Jehovah, and the one Jehovah sent. The one being sent is always lesser than the one Sending. They are separate individuals.



This is required to understand how the Ransom functions. Jesus had to be equal to Adam. He could never be Almighty God. The two could never be equal to humanly perfect Adam. Also, it is REQUIRED for Jesus to DIE. Not to pretend. Who would have the power to resurrect Almighty God? Only ONE has that power and can never die himself.

i once believed that it would be best to have an oligarchy ruule the world. i think i was in the third grade. i also think back and wonder how much thte teacher himself was led by an agenda so that it looked like i came to this conclusion of my own will. oligarchie and kings would be fine, as long as men were honest and righteous, but i dont see it in any politics in any part of the world. maybe only in some churches. but not the JWs. i personally studied at the kingdom hall and was taught a false prophecy. to which in high school class i stood up and defended and taught the prophecy.

to me! heresy is false doctrine. or something that is not sound doctrine as taught to be the truth. there are many things the JWs teach that are true, but this is true for all believers. everyone thinks they know the truth. by itself, this statement is heretical because people who teach doctrines of men are in apostasy. thus saith they Lord: they are all "wrong".

Okay let's say there's nothing wrong with John 1:1 of the NWT. "And the word was a god." That would mean JWs are polytheists. Anyway, Jesus has said multiple times in the original greek: "Ego Eimi" which translates to: "I AM THE BEING" or "I AM HE WHO EXISTS" which is the definition of YHWH / Jehovah.
