There is no list of new sins.

Again the media has either misinterpreted or purposely blown out of proportion a story involving the Church.

The latest case is the interview a Vatican official gave to the Vatican newspaper on the social impact of sin in a globalized society.

Here are some of the "headlines":

• “Vatican introduces more ways to sin“

• “Seven More Sins, Thanks to Vatican“

• “New sins as bad as the old sins — Vatican official“

• “Vatican Updates Its Thou-Shalt-Not List“

• “Recycle or go to Hell, warns Vatican”

This whole outlook assumes that there is a list of sins we can look up, besides the Ten Commandments or the seven deadly sins.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church does not even have a list of sins, although it does have an index of covered subjects.

For the real story, see: Social effects of sin greater than ever, says Vatican official: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/0801336.htm

I don't know where you're getting your information but it's horribly inaccurate.

The Catholic Church didn't "add" new sins to modern society.

Mordern society has found new ways of committing the same ol' sins, and that is what this list is.

The seven sins in question are:

1. "Bioethical" violations such as birth control

2. "Morally dubious" experiments such as embryonic stem cell research

3. Drug abuse

4. Polluting the environment

5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor

6. Excessive wealth

7. Creating poverty

As you can see, far from being replacements or additions to the original Seven Deadly Sins, these are just new ways in which mordern society has found to commit the same old sins.

Thanks to some ill-conceived "creative" writing, the media certainly did make it sound as if these sins were "new" and that they were to be, depending on who you read from, either replacements or additions to the Seven Deadly Sins.

Keep in mind that the media has NEVER been a bastion of proper theological understanding, so it's really not surprising how much they screwed up this story.

I do not understand what you are saying because birth control has always been considered a sin in the Catholic Church since I can remember. However, remember that all sins that are committed against life are sinful, euthanasia, capital punishment, abortion. These sins were not added they have always existed believe it or not. It is harder for me to hear someone say to you go ahead do your thing, if it feels good go for it, what does it matter, it's your life, who can tell you what to do ? I believe that the Catholic Church protects us and can only try and help us stay away from sin. We will have to answer to God for our choices but we can never say "no one told me it was wrong"!

First, the bible says no such thing; and secondly the Catholic Church did not add any "new" sins. You think that drug dealing was morally acceptable before the Catholic Church specifically listed it as a sin?? The Church simply pointed out some violations of the 10 Commandments that have become prevalent in modern society.

Hello,

They are only re-affirming certain practises that would fall into a sin category. For example if I speed 60 mph through a busy school zone and am endangering lives, driving like that is putting innocent lives in grave danger so it comes under the wing of thou shalt not kill, even though motor vehicles are not in the bible. Similarly if I am a greedy industrial plant manager and too lazy and cheap safely get rid of toxic waste and dump it into the public water systems, beaches or rivers, again I am endangering people's health or killing them slowly so that comes up as killing again. If I get people to invest their life's savings in very risky ventures and when the venture crashes, leave them to the wolves and pocket the money myself without giving what's left back to them I am committing the sin, thou shalt not steal.

So that begs the question - what is the problem?

I admit that I listened to portion of Rush in the present day. His argument is hypocrisy is sturdy for society using fact if there became no hypocrisy, there could be no morality. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Then this quote explains lots on misunderstandings: from Preface by utilising Rt. Rev. Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, D.D. There are no longer over one hundred human beings interior america who hate the Catholic Church. There are hundreds of thousands, besides the indisputable fact that, who hate what they wrongly have faith to be the Catholic Church - that is, of direction, somewhat a diverse element. those hundreds of thousands can infrequently be blamed for hating Catholics using fact Catholics “adore statues”; using fact they “positioned the Blessed mom on the comparable point with God”; using fact they say “indulgence is a permission to dedicate sin”; using fact the Pope “is a Fascist”; using fact the “Church is the defender of Capitalism.” If the Church taught or believed any a sort of issues it is going to be hated, yet in certainty that the Church does no longer have faith nor show anybody of them. It follows then that the hatred of the loads of thousands is directed against blunders and not against certainty. as a rely of certainty, if we Catholics believed each and all the untruths and lies that have been stated against the Church, we possibly might hate the Church one thousand circumstances greater suitable than they do.... This is not a subject in which anyone should have the slightest interest. It is hard to imagine anything less relevant to the trials of modern life than the unsubstantiated opinions of the Catholic Church.

We know that the bible is the word of God, remaining constant even though times are changing. The bible also tells us that the scripture is not for private interpretation.

This problem you are asking about is one of the many fauts of the Catholic faith. The followers allow the Pope to dictate what is truth and what to believe as if he were God.

Millions of souls have and millions more will one day find themselves in hell because they trusted the Pope with thier souls instead of seeking the truth for themselves "WORKING OUT THEIR OWN SALVATION" as commanded here -

Philippians 2:12

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Please feel free to email me if you would like to discuss this further.

since when has that stopped people from adding new sins, whether it is individuals or denominations?

also i find it hilarious considering the past and present of the Catholic church itself that one of the new 7 deadly sins is obscene wealth. very ironic.
2008-09-18 21:02:05 UTC
The media blew that all out of proportion.

What the Pope actually did was give examples of modern behaviours that violate the already existing sins.

The media just parsed it down to a catchy but inaccurate soundbite.

yea..we are not to add or to take away from the bible. God warns us of this.

God already let us know the difference between right and wrong in His word. the catholic church has no right to add or take away anything.

please be careful on quoting the good book as there is more than 1 bible that is recognized globally, and all religious doctrine has been translated more than once, and in translation comes interpretation

the new sins are a perception on a ancient set of rules for modern occurrences

Yeah, if you look at the common, modern-day Bible and compare it towards the old one, you'll see quite a difference. So I wouldn't be surprised if it's still changing.

There's many different versions of the Bible, and it's very open to interpretation.

Then the 'Bible' breaks its own rule adding to its self starting from the second book after Genesis.

They have not, please show your secular source. The Catholic Church is a divine institution given to us by Christ. What the Church Teaches in faith and morals is as though Christ says it. This is the work of the Holy Spirit guaranteed by Him. If you reject Church teachings you reject Christ
