Question:
Why did Jesus tell Mary "Touch Me not because I haven't ascended to My Father" (Jn20:17) then came back and told Thomas "Touch Me" (Jn20:27)?
2019-03-19 13:12:43 UTC
"Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God" (Jn 20:17).

"Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing" (John 20:27).

Jesus even walked through walls in flesh that that Thomas could touch

"Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you" (John 20:19).

And ate after resurrection

And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them" (Luke 24:41-43).

How could this Spiritual body do this?

Is it because we can too as mentioned in Romans 8:9?

"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his" (Romans 8:9).

Mary's touch -- which she seems to have done -- was holding, clinging, as if to prevent Jesus from leaving. "No," said Jesus. "I have to go to my Father. I will not stay here now." Thomas, on the other hand, was invited to see and even place his finger into the wounds.

For one, to not cling was to allow his early ministry to run to its completion. For the other, seeing and poking were to solidify the faith of the one who doubted. "My Lord and my God!" Thomas exclaimed. (Lit. "the Lord of me and the God of me."), articulating the true faith of the apostles from that moment -- Jesus was God in human flesh.

Two different scenarios, two different actions, two different needs -- and touches that were quite different in intent.

Forgive me.

The difference is that Jesus is telling Mary “quit hanging on to me, I've got to go”

‘Someone Who Cares’ is exactly right.

There’s no secret meaning in the scripture.

"And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm" (Matt 8:26).

"Greater WORKS than these shall ye do" (John 14:12).

"Little faith" that is (((NOT))) >>>THE<<< "FAITH" (I Corinthians 12:9) one receives (((AFTER))) Holy Spirit baptism (I Corinthians 12:13) but YOUR faith that is "tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine," (Ephesians 4:14) which is NOTHING!

With >>>THE<<< "FAITH" >>>"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matthew 17:20) but WITHOUT, people feel EXACTLY as you do!

He didn't want to be touched by a woman. He wanted to be touched by a man.

I suppose Jesus did not want Mary to touch him and he wanted Thomas to touch him. Why? I haven't a clue. Maybe he just didn't feel like being touched at the time.

Because Mary Magdalene lacked faith. This is what St. Padre Pio told us.

And "Mary" wrote that down, word for word, so that it could be included in the bible?

Jesus told Mary not to touch him because Jesus was fulfilling God’s entire requirement, right to the last detail. There is a significant reason why Mary was told not to touch him as compared to Thomas being able to touch him. In order to complete His Mission Jesus Christ had to go through the purifying process  the Law called for. Otherwise everything would be not have been fulfilled.

Jesus had to fulfill all the requirements of the Law. And this one was so very important:

"For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." (Matt: 5:18)

Mary, seeing her beloved and presumed-dead rabbi now alive, attempted to hug the resurrected Jesus (vs. 16). He emphatically told her that she could not touch him because He had not yet ascended to his Father (vs. 17). Shortly after (when all the disciples were gathered to regroup) Christ appeared to them resurrected! Thomas was absent from this gathering (vss. 19-21). Later, when the disciples reported to Thomas that they had seen Jesus alive, he understandably responded with skepticism (vs. 24). Eight days later, Jesus unexpectedly appeared again to the gathered disciples and challenged Thomas to touch him by placing his hands into the holes that remained in his body (vs. 26-27). The obvious question is this: why did Jesus deny Mary, but later encourage Thomas to touch Him?

In order to understand Jesus’ very different instructions to Mary and Thomas, we need to understand the purity requirements for the Jewish High Priest on the Day of Atonement. The High Priest was forbidden to come into contact with anything that was ceremonially unclean in order to avoid being disqualified to enter God’s presence the following day. So much depended on this ritual purity!

After His resurrection, Jesus (as our ultimate High Priest) would shortly be ministering in the heavenly tabernacle (Heb. 9:11). It is significant that Jesus appeared to the disciples and told Thomas to touch him after eight days, because it takes seven days to ordain a priest (Ex. 29:35).

The most-likely reason for Jesus’ instructions to Mary had to do with the fact that He was determined to enter the heavenly tabernacle in a ready-to-serve, consecrated state. Defilement would not be a sin, but it would have disqualified Him (for a period of time) from entering God’s presence. Mary may have had a number of reasons for defilement (possible menstrual circle, stepping into the tomb, etc), Jesus’ priestly mission was too important to allow for any possibility of failure.

By the time Jesus met Thomas, His priestly work is done. He had returned from completing His duties and possible defilement was no longer an issue.

Jesus’ role as prophet was carried out during His earthly life. His role as king was yet to be realized at the time of the ascension. He first needed to be ordained a priest and carry out His duties in the heavenly tabernacle! Nothing could be permitted to stand in the way of his mission.

- by faith; Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believed. (John 20:29).

And Yes when Jesus allowed Thomas to touch Him it was because Jesus fulfilled the requirements of Purity as our High Priest; touching Mary would have defiled Him; she did not realize this; but He did. That is why he said to her' Touch me not for I must ascend to my Father first!"

You said Lakesha > "Jesus even walked through walls in flesh that that Thomas could touch" - Amen! He appeared to these people. Which proves He created all things; and could easily move through them; especially being in His Glorified Body because He is God.

It is so important we see this significance of all that he was undoing. So we could enter into the Holy of Holies after Him.

That is a problem with translations. A more accurate translation would be "hold me not" in other words, I have to go now, not really about not touching.

The verses do not say, but it must have been a spiritual matter. Once Yeshua had returned He told Thomas to touch him and see that he was real. Well U can try and walk through walls but it is going to be eina and plenty of pain as U are still in the flesh.

Because Mary knew who it was. Thomas had to have proof. Devoted woman, doubting man.
